To send or not to send nudes: New Zealand girls critically discuss the contradictory gendered pressures of teenage sexting

Drawing on principles of participatory action research, we conducted workshop interviews with New Zealand secondary school girls about the dynamics sexting between and boys. We worked seven small groups (28 in total) aged 16 17 (each participating a series three workshops). Talk pressures associated was key theme discussions. Girls identified both to send nudes not nudes. They described these as operating interpersonal well wider sociocultural levels, marked by complicated intersection traditional discourses heterosexuality permissive postfeminist empowered female sexuality. The dynamic methodology used allowed us move beyond simply capturing snapshot gendered pressure. It provided space which also shared reflexive critical observations inequalities this practice.
